Backsplash Buying Guide

That wall space in your kitchen between the countertop and the cabinets holds a lot of potential. Right now it may just be painted drywall, but it can become so much more. Not only is a backsplash a great way to add an extra design element in your kitchen, but it’s practical too, especially for behind the stove where things tend to get a little messy.

With so many different tile options regarding color, material, size, and price, it may feel overwhelming to choose one. That’s why we’re providing you with some important factors that go into selecting and purchasing a backsplash.

Create a Focal Point

Some of the more interesting tile designs may be out of your budget, but that doesn’t mean you have to eliminate them completely. Space above the kitchen sink and the stove are often larger spans of wall than other areas of the kitchen and are great for creating a focal point, or a more intricate backsplash design.

If there’s an expensive type of tile that interests you, but you can’t afford to do the whole backsplash with that particular tile, use it for a focal point and then select a coordinating tile for the rest of the backsplash that is less expensive.

Mix and Match

Who says you have to pick one type of tile for your backsplash? If you can’t decide on just one tile, then perhaps you can mix and match more than one.

A great way to add interest is to choose a large, simple tile for the majority of the backsplash, and then throw in smaller tiles every so often to create a unique design. These smaller tiles that are interspersed could be a different texture, color, or even material than the rest of the tile. The backsplash is the easiest way to incorporate a splash of color into your kitchen.

Prioritize For Your Wallet’s Sake

You might find what you think is the perfect tile for your backsplash, only to find that it is way out of your price range. While it’s important to use quality tile, it’s also important to stick within your budget.

Before shopping for tile, think about what aspect is most important: price, color, material, design. Often people ignore traditional options such as subway tiles, but there are ways to take ordinary tiles and create a beautiful backsplash.

Think about arranging the tiles in a unique pattern to create some interest. Grout also plays an important role in the overall appearance of your backsplash. Choosing the right color of grout and applying it with planning and patience can make a world of difference in the finished product.
